Epitaph on the Tombstone of a Child, the Last of Seven that Died Before
By Aphra Behn
‍This Little, Silent, Gloomy Monument‍,
Contains all that was sweet and innocent ;
The softest pratler that e'er found a Tongue,
His Voice was Musick and his Words a Song ;
Which now each List'ning Angel smiling hears,
Such pretty Harmonies compose the Spheres;
Wanton as unfledg'd Cupids, ere their Charms
Has learn'd the little arts of doing harms ;
‍Fair as young Cherubins, as soft and kind,
And tho translated could not be refin'd ;
The Seventh dear pledge the Nuptial Joys had given,
Toil'd here on Earth, retir'd to rest in Heaven ;
Where they the shining Host of Angels fill,
Spread their gay wings before the Throne, and smile.

My sestina.

It slithers on the ground, that which is frightening,
Moving side to side, always.
What which is frightening, is very small.
Never much bigger then my arm, never.
It goes about its own business, usually.
But if it does bite, its bite is hard, and the pain large.

How do you rid yourself of a problem so large?
How do you destroy that which is soulfully frightening?
Most people are able to contain the problem easily, usually.
However something so large can’t merely be contained it must always,
Be doing something slithering, flickering, biting, never,
Without something to do. However the real problem, which ceases to be realized, is quite small.

We don’t need to rid ourselves of these beautiful creatures, their whole being small,
Enough to be rarely noticed. We should instead live at large,
In peace with these creatures. True the human race will never,
Be accepting to anything that’s so frightening.
But we must live with them, either way, peace or not, always.
And so they will go about their own business, usually.

And we will go about ours, usually.
But say for a second we did change, the change would be quite small.
They wouldn’t always,
Be so frightening.
It would take us a forever but forever’s better than never.

We wouldn’t move our self’s, never giving up our land, never,
But instead we would place them inside our land; they would mind their own business, usually.
By doing that, we would be the ones who are frightening.
Of course we would only give up a small,
Piece of our land. Something to large,
Would be unnecessary. We could keep them with us; keep them close, but not always.

Because of their nature they will always have a thirst for home, always.
And it can’t be filled, never,
Filled, until they are at large
Home again. Back to minding their own business, usually.
Back to their small,
Piece of land, back to being frightening.

We can do it, I know we can, it can't always,
Be like this. We can both mind our own business, usually, but then usually is better than never.
We will one day solve our small problem, and maybe even at large live in peace.
If we could do this, then maybe just maybe our children and ours children’s children will never know the meaning of frightening.

My free verse

Boom! Bang! Do you hear that?
It’s the sound of something being fixed.
Boom! Ding! And it’s new again.
Many think it’s easy, but really it’s a science.
Boom! Bang! No matter what the damage.
With a wash and a good luck to ya’, it’s out the door.
Boom! Ding! Never to be seen again.
